Interesting study & post. I think what usually happens is that parents of difficult baby think that they need to train the baby to be "easier" by not responding to their crying. Or if they respond to the crying immediately, it seems as though they're being "trained" by the baby, and not the other way around.

The Curiosity Cycle sounds really good. Thanks for reviewing it! The themes it explores remind me of those in Daniel Pink's book, A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future. However, Pink's book is geared a bit more toward adults. I look forward to reading one for parents and kids.

All children are definitely influenced by the parent's way of being. Upset, aggravated, angry; all emotions are a direct link to our children who have sensitive input valves. Counting to 10 (as in my book, "Moms Who Hate to Say NO!") is a remedy for dialing down our emotions when communicating with our children - at any age. Think how words and vibes effect us as adults. Why would newborns be any different? In fact all they have at first is their new awareness of environment, touching, feeling, seeing, smelling, hearing. If you can't get control - sing. If you can't sing - hummm! Soft, voices are a true effect on infants. Just like rocking, stroking lovingly (no matter how loud the cry) can have an affect. Some characteristics in personality we do come here with. Some are in the genes, some are learned behaviors. What would you like to teach them? How would you like to have an influence on your child?

Thanks for this! I have 9 children, many of whom I would have labeled as "difficult" babies/ toddlers. It was tons of exhausting work 24/7, especially since my husband was very busy and gone a lot. But I tried to stay positive and engaged. Now that the oldest is 19, it is so gratifying to see all of them as happy, social kids. Some of them still struggle with boundaries, etc. but they are not shy or afraid. I believe this research. :)

I love this article! I have this discussion with my partner often as his 15 year old is a digital native unable to socialise at all. He doesn't have many friends, and he is an only child. My question is - How will he be able to work in an environment where technology is NOT a big part of the job? Lawyer, doctor, dentist, TEACHING, plumber, etc. Where you have to interact with people, connect with them, etc. If you can't cope at 15, how much worse will it be at 25? Will kids just shy away from those jobs because they cant actually DO them? It depresses me to think about it even!

You said it! Personally, I find the argument about "preparing kids for their adult working world" kind of unsatisfying. As someone engaged in teaching, it would be hard for me to agree that every modern occupation is deluged in technology. Plus, I wholeheartedly agree with you that parents have important goals for their children's personal growth, not just their professional growth.

Maturity seems like a great goal for kids. But honestly, the happiest adults I see aren't particularly mature. They have a childlike quality to them. If a kid learns to regulate emotions, handle conflict, and self-evaluate, that's great. But adults who seem REALLY good at that seem kind of anal -- the ones who don't know how to have fun.

Maybe there are a lot of ways of being happy and we should nurture all of them.

I think we have to start looking at the relationship BETWEEN playfulness, exploration, and content. The three are not mutually exclusive, but can produce synergy.

Content is simply the tablet - what you "write" on it is the soul of the thing. That is where the MOOD of playfulness is so important.

On the other side, playfulness with no guidance is just as ineffective as purely academic schooling.

Really liked this article. Struck a chord with me as my 2 children both go to a play based preschool and I definitely notice a difference between them and children from a more education orientated playschool, though their emotional intelligence seems much more advanced. Thanks for the read.
